Pairing Stool Heights with Bench Heights
Getting this right makes all the difference to how a kitchen or bar feels to sit in. A simple guide to help you choose with confidence.
The Rule of Thumb
The ideal gap between a bench surface and a stool seat is around 250mm. This leaves enough room to sit comfortably without feeling like you're perching or straining. Function, more than aesthetics, should drive the decision first.
There are two common scenarios in residential and commercial settings, each calling for a different stool height.
Kitchen Benches
Standard residential kitchen benches sit between 900 and 950mm high. For these, a stool seat height of 650mm is the sweet spot.
| Setting | Bench Height | Stool Height | Comfort Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen (residential) | 900–950mm | 650mm | ~250mm |
| Bar / commercial | 1000–1100mm | 750mm | ~250mm |
Bar and Commercial Tops
Commercial bar benches are typically 1000 to 1100mm high, calling for a 750mm stool to keep proportions comfortable and posture natural.
